Earlier this week the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issued its latest report from global scientists. Its conclusion is that the current unprecedented global warming is “unequivocally” due to human activity.
António Guterres, the UN secretary-general, warned: “[This report] is a code red for humanity. The alarm bells are deafening, and the evidence is irrefutable: greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel burning and deforestation are choking our planet and putting billions of people at immediate risk.”
Climate change is already having a catastrophic impact in Nigeria – from drying up of Lake Chad to floods in Bauchi State, also reported this week. From desertification in the far north to inundation by the sea in the Niger Delta.
This pamphlet provides the background to understand global warming and the wider environmental challenge. The 100 largest fossil fuel companies have been responsible for 71 percent of global emissions since 1988. The richest 10% of the world’s population is responsible for almost half of the world’s total lifestyle carbon emissions. It is capitalism that is to blame.
If we are not able to move beyond capitalism the most barbaric aspects of the world will spread. As Rosa Luxemburg, the Polish socialist said a hundred years ago, “the future is either socialism or barbarism”. We have to bring back hope, another world is possible!
